It has been a period of new types of photographs. This time around I was asked to take a team photograph of a friend’s soccer team before their match. I subsequently stayed and worked on some action shots during the first half.
I have played soccer for a long time so I understood the way the players would move on the field and what sort of plays to expect. Nonetheless, I had a hard time getting used to the timing and tempo of the match. Also my camera settings were a bit all over the place at first. Eventually I settled down on some settings that worked pretty well and allowed me to freeze the action and have as low a depth of field as possible. I certainly learned a number of lessons including using an even narrower depth of field than I did, and to have a second camera with a lens that could cover the action closer to me, something along the lines of a 24-70mm. I could get away with that because I was directly on the sideline which is a bit different than at a professional game where you are a bit further from the action.
