I had an opportunity to go out on Sydney Harbour to observe ferry vessel wake trials. These trials were designed to measure the height and energy of the wakes created by various ferries and would create a baseline for future vessels. It was interesting to see the effect of speed and vessel weight on the size of the wake, including the amount of energy. We got lucky though because the weather was a bit nasty, but the water was quite calm which allowed for more accurate measurements, plus there were plenty of rainbows around.
Since I was observing I brought a camera and documented the work that was being undertaken. Being a scientist/researcher isn’t always glamorous but these guys didn’t seem to complain too much so I captured them installing their various gear. I only ended up using two lenses with some fill flash the entire day, the 16-35mm for the environmental photographs and the 70-200mm the rest of the time.
