The Angkor complex of temples has close to 300 temples that have been discovered beside Angkor Wat. There is a massive variety in the types of temples from the pink sandstone of Banteay Srey Temple to the complexity of Bayon Temple. Below are a number of photographs from some of these slightly less known but no less spectacular temples of Angkor.
We spent just under a week in the Siem Reap area, but it was nowhere enough time to explore the wonderful history there. I suspect that soon we will make a return trip to see some of the other temples and also take in the fishing villages...
Visiting Siem Reap in Cambodia was a wonderful experience which I recommend to anyone who hasn't been. The people are wonderful and the sights are amazing. Take these photographs of Angkor Wat which don't do the temple justice as a whole. The rain made it even more interesting because it showed some of the design features of the temple including the way four of the big pools on the lower level of the temple began to fill with water.
I believe that a person can spend weeks or even months exploring the various hallways and rooms taking in all of the wonderful details. One of the interesting...
Here is another excerpt from Cambodia. This time I wanted to focus on the people and what they do every day. One of the often overlooked aspects of tourism are the people working within the industry that make it happen in through their work in the background. An example is the housekeeping staff at our hotel who made our stay much better through the little things like arranging the flowers in our room in a very pleasing way.
There are the workers who maintain the monuments and historically important sites through their hard work, and in Cambodia often in very hot and humid days.
Other...
Cambodia is a great country with amazing sights and wonderful people. However, it is important to remember it's recent bloody history involving the Khmer Rouge and the atrocities perpetrated by them. This history is still very much part of the fabric of the society there since people from both sides of the conflict are still living. It is important to remember this history so as to learn from it and never allow it to happen again.
This is a tribute to the victims of the Khmer Rouge and the survivors still coping with the after effects. The bones in the photographs are from some of the more...
This is the first of several posts about Cambodia. The three photographs above were taken at Ta Phrom Temple which is part of the Angkor complex and a short distance from Angkor Wat itself. It is the temple where parts of the Tomb Raider movies were filmed. As a consequence the temple is a bit over commercialised, however, even that doesn't detract from the amazing sight of the trees growing over and through the temple walls. Of course, Ta Phrom is not the only temple that has trees growing through it, but it is one of the most dramatic.
The Cambodian government with the help of international...
The blog has been a little bit quiet lately because we are away on a trip to Cambodia via Singapore. We have a few more days before getting home to Australia, so we are making the most of our time away. In the meantime here is one photograph from Angkor Wat. I was going to show a beautiful awe inspiring photograph of Angkor Wat, but instead I am showing you this photograph of a Korean man with a monkey on his shoulder. Let this be a warning to people visiting, don't feed the animals unless you want them sitting on your shoulder eating food off your head. More to come soon.
