Photo of the week
After a delay, ok a few months delay, I have finally gotten around to posting about the 1st Anniversary Google+ Photowalk. The walk that I attended was quite popular with about 40 or 50 participants walking throughout the day. There were several familiar faces whom I met at other events as well as quite a few new photographers. I really enjoy participating in these types of events both as an excuse to get out and shoot and also as a chance to meet other photographers in the area.
We ended up having a wonderfully sunny and warm winter day for the walk. Almost felt like spring while we walked from the Sydney Opera House through the Botanical Gardens and Miss Macquaries Chair all the way to Woolloomooloo. We met some interesting characters including a couple of the denizens of the ponds in the Botanical Gardens, whom I have heard about before just never seen. There was also a group of about 25 BMX riders doing a ride around the city who we saw walking up the steps where we chated with them. That’s another positive from these walks, just being able to meet and chat to different people along the way. As a photographer in a group, I find it much easier to approach someone to ask them for a portrait because they immediately have something to talk to you about. Of course there is also the danger of having 10 photographers swarming the person who might feel like a celebrity being rushed by paparazzi. It’s a great way to build your confidence as a street or travel photographer in approaching people and getting them to pose for you.
I look forward to more of these walks with the chance to meet other photographers and get inspiration through their websites and Google+ pages. A big thumbs up to Google for not only supporting this event but also for creating a place where photographers can share information and photographs so easily.
